Sonny’s Pizza
About This Spot
Stepping into Sonny’s Pizza on Georgia Ave feels like finding a quietly spirited corner of Washington, DC, where the pace slows just enough to savor familiar comforts alongside thoughtful creativity. The space blends a welcoming neighborhood vibe with just the right amount of buzz—from the soft clatter of plates to warm conversations drifting from the bar to the covered patio out back.
Here, the mood is relaxed and inclusive, effortlessly accommodating a casual lunch, a lively birthday gathering, or a slow evening with friends. Whether you settle in the cozy main dining room, perch at the bar with its carefully curated drink options, or soak up fresh air on the patio, you’re wrapped in an ambience that feels both honest and inviting.
Sonny’s pizza offerings follow the same spirit—rooted in classic, soulful flavors but never without a twist. It’s a place where slices carry unexpected moments: a drizzle of chili oil, the comforting chew of garlic knots, or a custom half-and-half pie that invites you to become your own explorer of tastes. The menu leans into familiar favorites like pepperoni and sausage, but with attention to details that elevate the experience—like fresh basil or a perfectly balanced arugula slice. Pairing these with well-chosen wines, vibrant aperitifs, or a subtle rye old fashioned brings a dimension beyond the plate, turning a simple meal into a shared ritual.
What lingers most after a visit is not just the food, but the gentle rhythm of connection—the attentive yet unhurried service, the smiles exchanged between strangers finding a good seat, and the feeling of having discovered a gem that fits comfortably into the fabric of the neighborhood. Sonny’s isn’t just about pizza; it’s about the moments that make familiar flavors memorable.

That pizza was so good! And it’s such a cute spot! We tried a couple of their pizzas and each one was better than the last! Everyone was super friendly, and it wasn’t bad finding a seat. They had multiple options from the main dining room, to the bar, to a covered patio out back! We ended up sitting in the bar, which was nice because they had a wider drink selection. The service was very attentive. The food was great, and the drinks were great too. They had a long list of apéritif and soda options, which I haven’t really seen other places, but it was a nice refreshing Option. I’d highly recommend going!

Stumbled across this place as I was ordering carryout up the street at Eddie Leonard's on Sunday. The pizza was great... I Had a large pepperoni with basil and xcheese. I just finished eating the last slice today and it was just as if I ordered today. Follow the reheat instructions.

The pizza is great, but keep in mind they have 20% service charge -- which is fine, but some things shouldn't require and extra 20%. If you order the pepperoni pizza (with a kid) it might be worth getting the Parmesan on the side (it can be way too salty otherwise). We bought one of restaurant's wines (Cabin Vineyard - sparkling piquette) - $30, it it was undrinkable. It's a crown cap bottle and was clear that fermentation continued in the bottle and the wine had a very off taste. I'm not really sure the protocol for returning an opened bad wine, so if the restaurant owner or winemaker is reading this, I'd suggest reaching out. Cocktails were great though!
